## Quick answer

What could breast pain mean? Breast pain is commonly related to periods, pregnancy, menopause, medicines or pain referred from the chest wall. Pain by itself is unlikely to be breast cancer, but persistent pain or pain with a lump, nipple discharge, skin dimpling, shape change, heat or redness needs assessment.

General UK health information, not a diagnosis. In an emergency call 999 ; for urgent advice use [NHS 111](https://111.nhs.uk/) (GP out-of-hours in Northern Ireland).

## Common causes of breast pain

- Period-related pain often affects both breasts before a period.
- A supportive, correctly fitted bra and suitable pain relief may help.
- Evening primrose oil and vitamin E have little evidence for benefit.

## Common patterns

Cyclical pain often affects both sides and settles after a period. Non-cyclical pain may come from pregnancy, [menopause](https://healthanswers.co.uk/conditions/menopause/), medicines, infection or the chest wall.

## Self-care

Wear a well-fitted bra and use [paracetamol](https://healthanswers.co.uk/treatments/paracetamol/), ibuprofen or pain-relief gel only if suitable. Keep a symptom and menstrual-cycle note to identify patterns.

## Changes to check

Do not wait for routine screening if you notice a new lump, nipple discharge or inversion, skin dimpling, breast-shape change or persistent focal pain.

## ! When to get medical help for breast pain

See a GP if pain persists or self-care does not help. Ask for urgent assessment or call NHS 111 for a hard fixed lump, bloody nipple discharge, breast-shape change, dimpled skin, nipple inversion, or a red hot swollen breast with fever or shivering.

## Common questions about breast pain

Is breast pain a sign of cancer? Pain alone is unlikely to be cancer, but new lumps, nipple or skin changes, or persistent one-sided symptoms should be checked. Why do my breasts hurt before a period? Hormonal changes can cause both breasts to feel heavy, aching or tender in the 1 to 2 weeks before a period. Can neck or shoulder strain feel like breast pain? Yes. Pain from the chest wall, ribs, neck, shoulder or back can be felt in the breast area.
