## Quick answer

What could coughing up blood mean? Coughing up blood can appear as small streaks in phlegm from an infection or irritated airway, but it can also signal a blood clot, tuberculosis or cancer. Even a few spots or streaks should be assessed urgently. More than a few streaks, breathing difficulty, chest pain or a very fast heartbeat requires 999.

General UK health information, not a diagnosis. In an emergency call 999 ; for urgent advice use [NHS 111](https://111.nhs.uk/) (GP out-of-hours in Northern Ireland).

## Common causes of coughing up blood

- Blood coughed from the lungs is different from a nosebleed or vomiting blood.
- Record roughly how much blood there is and associated symptoms.
- Smoking history, weight loss or repeated episodes increase concern.

## Possible causes

Common causes include a severe [cough](https://healthanswers.co.uk/symptoms/cough/), bronchitis, pneumonia or bronchiectasis. More serious possibilities include a pulmonary embolism, tuberculosis or lung cancer.

## What to tell the clinician

Describe the colour and amount, when it began, [fever](https://healthanswers.co.uk/symptoms/high-temperature/), chest pain, breathlessness, weight loss, leg swelling, recent travel, smoking and blood-thinning medicines.

## Do not delay

The amount can change quickly, and symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the source. Arrange the recommended urgent assessment.

## ! When to get medical help for coughing up blood

Ask for an **urgent GP appointment** or call NHS 111 for any blood coughed up. Call **999** if it is more than a few spots or streaks, does not stop, or occurs with severe breathlessness, chest or upper-back pain, a very fast heartbeat, dizziness or fainting.

## Common questions about coughing up blood

Can a chest infection cause blood-streaked phlegm? Yes, coughing and airway inflammation can cause streaks, but blood still needs assessment rather than assuming infection. What tests might be needed? Depending on risk and symptoms, tests can include a chest X-ray, blood tests, sputum testing or a CT scan. Could the blood be from my nose? Blood from a nosebleed can run down the throat. Tell the clinician whether you coughed, vomited or noticed nasal bleeding.
