## Quick answer

What could vaginal dryness mean? Vaginal dryness is common around menopause, during breastfeeding and with some medicines. Water-based lubricant for sex and a vaginal moisturiser can help. Persistent symptoms, unusual discharge, bleeding after sex or after menopause, or recurrent urinary symptoms should be discussed with a GP.

General UK health information, not a diagnosis. In an emergency call 999 ; for urgent advice use [NHS 111](https://111.nhs.uk/) (GP out-of-hours in Northern Ireland).

## Common causes of vaginal dryness

- Use products made for vaginal use; perfumed washes and douches can irritate.
- Local vaginal oestrogen is effective for many menopause-related symptoms.
- Dryness can coexist with urinary urgency or recurrent UTIs.

## Causes

Hormone changes around [menopause](https://healthanswers.co.uk/conditions/menopause/), pregnancy and breastfeeding are common causes. Some contraception, antidepressants, cancer treatments, diabetes and Sjögren’s syndrome can also contribute.

## Self-care

Choose water-based lubricant and a purpose-made vaginal moisturiser. Avoid perfumed soap, washes and douching. Allow time for arousal and discuss pain openly with a partner.

## Medical treatment

A GP may discuss vaginal oestrogen or broader [HRT](https://healthanswers.co.uk/treatments/hormone-replacement-therapy/) when appropriate and check for infection, skin conditions or other causes when symptoms are atypical.

## ! When to get medical help for vaginal dryness

See a GP if symptoms last several weeks, affect daily life or sex, or self-care has not helped. Seek assessment for unusual discharge, sores, bleeding between periods, bleeding after sex or any bleeding after menopause.

## Common questions about vaginal dryness

What is the difference between lubricant and moisturiser? Lubricant reduces friction during sex; a vaginal moisturiser is used regularly to improve ongoing moisture. Is vaginal oestrogen the same as full HRT? No. Local oestrogen uses a low dose in the vagina with much lower whole-body absorption than systemic HRT. Suitability still needs discussion. Can breastfeeding cause dryness? Yes. Lower oestrogen during breastfeeding can contribute, and symptoms often improve as hormone levels change.
