Causes

Hormone changes around menopause, pregnancy and breastfeeding are common causes. Some contraception, antidepressants, cancer treatments, diabetes and Sjögren’s syndrome can also contribute.

Self-care

Choose water-based lubricant and a purpose-made vaginal moisturiser. Avoid perfumed soap, washes and douching. Allow time for arousal and discuss pain openly with a partner.

Medical treatment

A GP may discuss vaginal oestrogen or broader HRT when appropriate and check for infection, skin conditions or other causes when symptoms are atypical.

Common questions about vaginal dryness

What is the difference between lubricant and moisturiser?
Lubricant reduces friction during sex; a vaginal moisturiser is used regularly to improve ongoing moisture.
Is vaginal oestrogen the same as full HRT?
No. Local oestrogen uses a low dose in the vagina with much lower whole-body absorption than systemic HRT. Suitability still needs discussion.
Can breastfeeding cause dryness?
Yes. Lower oestrogen during breastfeeding can contribute, and symptoms often improve as hormone levels change.
